Why did this outreach campaign work?

We love a good cold email teardown. In other words, analyzing why a specific cold email template worked and breaking it down to the smallest details so that both a beginner and an advanced player can extract value from it.

Without further ado, let's get rolling.

A foolproof list

The number one key to a successful cold sequence is the quality of your list

You can send 100% personalized emails to each of your leads but if they aren't the right leads you won't get many (if any) conversions. But if you send a relevant campaign to a list of well targeted leads, you'll see responses pour in.

Jack's email manager, Alexis, knew this group of people were often on their phones on jobs and open to opportunities, making cold email the perfect fit for them.

We know how hard it is to find the perfect list. If you're looking for some tips on creating your email lists, steal ideas from this article

Adapting to your leads

Once Alexis targeted their leads, Jack created an email copy that would resonate according to these specific leads. It's vital to keep your leads in mind when writing your emails! And put yourself in their shoes when you read the final product.

There are a few ways Jack did that for this campaign that you can steal:

  • Keep the email short and sweet - they knew these leads were most likely reading emails on their phones so they kept the copy short to make it easily readable for mobile screens.
  • Get straight to the point - the leads they were targeting didn't want an email full of fluff, they like to be addressed straight with why it matters for them. Jack did this by being honest about his intent to gauge interest, clearly laid out the benefits, added social proof, and closed with an email clearly asking for intent.
  • Use a familiar tone - even though their offer is serious (thanks to how straight to the point it is), it sounds like it's coming from a colleague or friend. Tip to do this for your emails is to write out your email as a text draft to one of your colleagues, it'll put you in the mindset to create a friendly tone.
  • Approachable CTA - the copy is really straightforward, so adding a harsh CTA would have made this email feel a bit stiff and salesy. Jack recognized this and kept his CTA clear but approachable.
