What Is Lead Enrichment? How 14+ Data Providers Get You 80%+ Valid Contacts (2026 Guide)
According to SmarterHQ, 72% of consumers say they only engage with marketing content that’s tailored to their specific interests. (Why personalized consumer-brand relationships are the future | Featured News Story | Verizon) That stat applies to cold outreach, too. Generic emails get ignored. Personalized ones get replies.
The problem is, when you scrape data, you don’t always get the correct information, making it painfully obvious that you didn’t write the email for that person.
Enriching your leads fixes this.
In this piece, I’ll show you exactly how lead enrichment works, what data types actually move reply rates, what your options are for doing it, and how we handle it inside lemlist.
What is lead enrichment?
To enrich your leads means to go through a process in which you enhance and complete the data you currently have on them.
You can either do this manually (which is time-consuming, to say the least) or you can use tools to scrape and enrich leads’ data.
However you choose to enrich your leads’ data, you should know that it is a required step to properly segment and target your leads with effective personalization.
Without enrichment, you’re working from a skeleton: name, email, maybe a company. With it, you have context. Context is what turns a cold email into a relevant one.
Lead enrichment process
Enriching your leads is a straightforward process. It goes beyond just adding missing information. It’s four steps that lead to complete, accurate, and actionable data.
1. Lead generation
Find your leads using databases or scraping data with a Chrome extension from LinkedIn or any other platform.
At this point, you may just gather basic information such as name, email, company, etc. However, if you’re using powerful tools, you’re likely to receive only enriched data and even have a built-in enrichment step.
2. Data validation
You can do this with email verification tools to ensure you have the correct data so you’re not wasting your time or hurting your deliverability.
However, you can skip this step if you invest in a finder and verifier tool.
At this point, you can also make sure that your lists of leads are clean and do not have duplicates.
3. Data enrichment
This is where you can finally start to fill in the blanks.
We strongly suggest using lead enrichment tools to make sure you don’t waste valuable resources (including your time).
Make sure you include all of the data you’ve included in your ICP so you can conduct successful strategies and campaigns.
We’ll discuss the type of data you can enrich in the following section.
4. Lead segmentation
Once you have all of your leads’ relevant information, you’ll be able to effectively segment them into smaller lists.
This will help you send highly targeted cold outreach campaigns to all of your leads and increase your chances of conversion.
One thing worth noting: enrichment doesn’t stop at segmentation. Enriched data also feeds lead routing, prioritization, and scoring. It determines which leads get contacted first, by which rep, through which channel. The downstream effects compound.
What data can you enrich?
There’s a wide variety of data that you can enrich. It all comes down to your ICP and what you need to know about your leads.
Contact data
This is the foundation: verified email addresses, phone numbers, LinkedIn URLs. Without accurate contact data, nothing else matters. Your message can be perfect, but if the email bounces or the phone number is dead, it never reaches anyone. That’s why lemlist’s waterfall enrichment checks 14+ providers to push valid email find rates to ~80%.
Demographic data
This covers the basics about the person: name, job title, seniority level, and where that role sits in the decision chain. Demographic data grants you decent personalization and increases your chances of contacting the decision-maker on your first try.
Firmographic data
This data type is directly related to your leads’ business or organizations, including:
→ Industry
→ Company size
→ Location
→ Revenue
Technographic data
Being able to identify the technology your lead is using can also be vital to make your sales.
We suggest picking a database that can help you filter the technology your leads use.
Intent data
This is where enrichment gets interesting. Intent data tells you which leads are actively in-market, not just a fit on paper. lemlist detects intent by combining public and behavioral data, tracking website visits (via IP matching), LinkedIn engagement, and job postings (lemlist Intent Signals: Spot buying clues & outreach at the best time) from various sources. When someone is hiring for a role your product fills, or researching your category, that’s a buying signal. Enriching with intent data lets you reach out at exactly the right time. You can explore how this works inside lemlist’s Intent Signals.
Behavioral and engagement data
Behavioral data captures how a lead has interacted with your content, your website, or your previous outreach. Did they open three emails? Visit your pricing page twice? Click a case study link? This data helps you prioritize follow-ups and tailor messaging to what a prospect has already shown interest in.
Benefits of lead enrichment
Lead enrichment offers concrete benefits:
✅ Ensuring you have the correct contact info to avoid the spam folder
✅ Captivating your leads with accurate personalization
✅ Including personalized icebreakers or P.S. lines
✅ Keeping your lead lists up-to-date
✅ Segmenting your lists effectively to contact your leads with the correct approach and timing
✅ Ultimately, closing more deals
And when your enrichment runs through 14+ providers via waterfall (as it does inside lemlist), you’re not leaving coverage to chance. Waterfall email enrichment queries 10+ data providers in sequence: if the first provider cannot find a valid address, the system tries the next, and every found email is double-verified before delivery. This cascading approach pushes email coverage to roughly 80%, about double the 40–50% find rate from single-source vendors. (lemlist Features: Complete Breakdown [July 2026])
Here’s an example of how lead enrichment can help you get more replies:
Imagine you are a salesperson reaching out to prospects to sell a SaaS product that streamlines project management.
Without lead enrichment, your cold emails may look something like this:
This email appears very generic, non-personalized, and won’t catch prospects’ attention or get replies.
On the other hand, you can boost your email personalization for more replies with custom variables. To use custom variables, you can get your leads’ quality data from LinkedIn, aka use lead enrichment:
- name: Alex
- job title: project manager
- company name: Fixus
- industry: tech
- accomplishments: recognized for successfully implementing a new project management system
Then, your emails can look like this:
In the second example, gathering Alex’s information helped you personalize your message and connect with him more meaningfully. By referencing a recent achievement and acknowledging his expertise in project management, you demonstrate a genuine interest in his work.
This approach increases the chances of getting a positive reply and booking a meeting with you.
How to approach lead enrichment: your options
Before I walk you through how we handle enrichment inside lemlist, it’s worth laying out the landscape honestly. There are several legitimate approaches, and the right one depends on your team size, budget, and workflow.
Manual research. You (or your SDRs) look up each lead on LinkedIn, company websites, news, and social profiles. It gives you the deepest context per lead, but it doesn’t scale. Expect 5–15 minutes per lead. For a small, high-ACV pipeline, this can work. For anything over 50 leads a week, it breaks.
CRM-native enrichment. HubSpot and Salesforce both offer built-in enrichment features (HubSpot Breeze Intelligence, Salesforce Data Cloud). If you already live inside one of these CRMs, native enrichment keeps your data in one system. The tradeoff: coverage is often limited compared to dedicated enrichment tools, and the enrichment depth (especially for phone numbers and technographics) tends to lag.
Dedicated enrichment platforms. Tools like Clay, Apollo, Clearbit (now Breeze), and ZoomInfo focus entirely on enrichment. Clay, in particular, lets you build flexible multi-provider waterfall sequences with no-code automation. These are powerful if enrichment is your primary bottleneck and you don’t mind managing a separate tool in your stack.
All-in-one outreach platforms with built-in enrichment. This is where lemlist fits. Instead of enriching in one tool and exporting to another for outreach, you find, enrich, verify, and contact leads from a single workflow. The advantage is speed and simplicity: no CSV exports, no sync issues, no duplicate management across tools.
Each approach has tradeoffs. I’ve used most of them. The question is whether enrichment is a standalone workflow for you or part of a larger outreach motion. If it’s the latter, read on.

When selecting your leads, you can enrich them easily with the click of a single button and avoid importing duplicate leads.
The best thing about using lemlist to enrich your data is that lemlist offers a waterfall lead enrichment process. This gives you access to 14 best-in-class data providers with a single subscription, delivering higher find rates, broader coverage, and a fraction of the cost of stacking multiple tools. (lemlist’s Waterfall Enrichment: Find ~80% Verified Leads’ Emails)
Once you have selected your leads, you can push them directly to an existing campaign without the hassle of having to jump between different apps.
Once you have your campaign ready, you simply have to click on Enhance leads where you will get the option to select LinkedIn enrichment, phone numbers, email verification or AI variables, where you can clean your lists and qualify your leads, among others (we’ll discuss AI variables and agentic enrichment further along too).
Once you have enriched your leads, your list will look like the image below. In this case we have chosen not to disclose phone numbers. However, lemlist’s waterfall enrichment method delivers a 77% phone number find rate, compared to up to 50% market average, without stacking extra tools. How can lemlist AI Variables and Agentic Enrichment enrich your leads
With lemlist’s AI variables, you can access a whole library of prompts that you can include in your list of leads for any campaign, or you can create your own prompts.
Among others, AI variables can:
- Segment your leads
- Clean data
- Eliminate duplicates
- Include icebreakers and P.S. lines
If you want to learn more, check out the video below.
But AI Variables are just one layer. lemlist also offers AI Agentic Enrichment, which goes beyond filling in fields. AI agents extract data from websites, LinkedIn, your CRM or past calls, and personalize outreach at scale. No manual research. Directly inside lemlist. (lemlist AI agentic enrichment)
Agents can analyze multiple data sources at once, including websites, LinkedIn profiles, CRM data (HubSpot, Salesforce), and past call transcripts. This allows them to build a more complete understanding of each lead. The output is structured data you can immediately use in your workflow, including things like lead scores, segmentation tags, intent signals, key insights, or personalized message variables. (lemlist AI agentic enrichment)
Where standard enrichment fills in what’s missing, agentic enrichment converts raw signals into structured, usable context. That’s the difference between knowing someone’s job title and knowing they just discussed budget constraints for your category on a recorded sales call.
FAQ
How do you automate lead enrichment?
The fastest way is to use a tool with built-in waterfall enrichment. Inside lemlist, you select your leads from the database (or import them), click “Enhance leads,” and choose what to enrich: emails, phone numbers, LinkedIn data, or AI-generated variables. The system runs through 14+ providers automatically. No manual lookups, no CSV wrangling.
Is lead enrichment GDPR-compliant?
It depends on how the data is collected and processed. lemlist is GDPR compliant and SOC 2 certified (lemlist Features: Complete Breakdown [July 2026]). The platform uses publicly available data and verified opt-in sources. That said, compliance also depends on your own outreach practices: having a lawful basis for contact, offering opt-outs, and maintaining accurate records.
What’s the difference between lead enrichment and lead scoring?
Lead enrichment adds data to a lead record (contact info, firmographics, intent signals). Lead scoring assigns a value to that lead based on how well it matches your ICP and how engaged it is. Enrichment feeds scoring. You need accurate, complete data before any scoring model can work properly.
How often should you re-enrich your lead data?
People change jobs, companies pivot, tech stacks evolve. We recommend re-enriching your active lists at least quarterly. If you’re running high-volume outbound, monthly is better. Stale data means bounced emails, wrong names, and wasted sequences.
