We love a good cold email teardown. In other words, analyzing why a specific cold email template worked and breaking it down to the smallest details so that both a beginner and an advanced player can extract value from it.
Without further ado, let's get rolling.
No matter how good your first email in a sequence is, there will always be those prospects who open your message but don't reply. Of course, there will be also those who won't open your email at all.
However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't follow up with everyone. In general, you can group all follow-up email strategies into two groups. Ones that serve the "remind them" purpose and those that add more value and are part of the story.
The one we're looking at right now is a reminder, but far from a regular one. Its components are written in a way to be more human and funny, making prospects feel appreciated.
Can you guess what the first one? Yeah, that's right, mentioning a colleague. Whether you actually reach out to a colleague or just use their Instagram photo is less important. What matters is that sales starts and ends with building and nurturing relationships. This little sentence adds that necessary flavor and shows to which side you belong.
On top of that, if you're not able to figure out what's the prospect's go-to coffee, you can always joke with some audacious Starbucks coffee variations, as Guillaume did in the example. Caramel Drizzle... haha.
The second important component is an image of you holding two coffee cups. One has your name on it, the other that of your prospect. Of course, lemlist will pull this information from the CSV file and update every image automatically for you.
G also combined this with heavy personal branding campaigns on LinkedIn, so a significant percentage of people could recognize them right then and there.
What can we learn from Guillaume's cold email template?
