Why did this outreach campaign work?

We love a good cold email teardown. In other words, analyzing why a specific cold email template worked and breaking it down to the smallest details so that both a beginner and an advanced player can extract value from it.

Without further ado, let's get rolling.

Lead qualification prior to sending.

While talking to Julia and her team, we realized she vetted each of the 221 people she contacted. In other words, she qualified each candidate using her own indicators to determine who would be the people most likely to be interested in such an opportunity.

How can somebody qualify leads before ever talking to them?

You have to identify a "common pattern", based on your research and experience, that would allow you to segment prospects who are most likely to respond. For example, if you're looking to hire somebody, you can look for things like "current job/availability", "relevant work experience", "company's track record so far", and candidate's content on social media. Assign ranking criteria to each and assess who qualifies most.

Quality research leads to quality results, and Julia's campaign is no exception.

Copywriting aligned with their brand

When hiring, selling, or whatever your objective ultimately is, it's vastly important for us to be speaking the way we and our brand speaks. Julia isn't a robot, nor is her company. With that in mind, she opted for a very friendly and fun style of writing to bring her brand closer to candidates. Using sentences like "our CEO walks around just in a casual t-shirt!" or the photo of her dogs makes her cold email sound warm and human. And, at a same time, it differentiates Julia from the rest of the sourcers.

What can we learn from Julia's cold email sequence?

  • Thorough research and qualifying leads consume time like crazy, but the rewards are double digit reply rates
  • Help people relate and connect to the brand, and you've already started building relationship with them
  • Mixing personal hobbies or passion (e.g. dogs) can add a nice little kick to your email outreach
