HubSpot data enrichment: native options, limits and how to automate it

HubSpot data enrichment runs through a feature HubSpot calls Breeze Intelligence, which pulls from its own commercial dataset (originally built from Clearbit, which HubSpot acquired in 2023) plus public web data. It matches contacts by first name, last name, and work email, and matches companies by domain. If a contact only has a personal email, or a company record has no domain, HubSpot has nothing to match against and simply skips it.

What HubSpot data enrichment actually does

HubSpot data enrichment matches your CRM records against its commercial dataset, third-party providers, and public web data, then writes what it finds into standard properties. According to HubSpot’s knowledge base, contact enrichment matches on first name, last name, and work email, while company enrichment matches on company domain.

Contacts with only a personal email address (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) and companies without a domain are not eligible. This is the first filter that trips teams up: if you import a list from an event and half the attendees signed up with personal addresses, HubSpot won’t enrich any of them.

After Clearbit was acquired by HubSpot, HubSpot rebranded it as Breeze Intelligence in September 2024. The underlying data is the same Clearbit dataset, now served natively inside HubSpot’s CRM.

Which properties HubSpot enriches (and which it skips)

HubSpot’s enrichment covers two objects. The contact side is relatively thin, while the company side is considerably more detailed.

Native enrichment covers 14 contact properties and 26 company properties. Contact email and contact phone appear on neither list.

Here is a summary of the properties HubSpot can and cannot enrich, based on its knowledge base documentation:

Object

What HubSpot enriches

What it does not enrich

Contact

Job title, employment role, seniority, LinkedIn URL, city, country, first/last name

Email address, phone number, mobile number

Company

Industry, employee count, revenue, year founded, web technologies, LinkedIn page, total money raised, description, phone number

Technographic depth, buying signals, contact-level direct dials

HubSpot data enrichment does not find contact email addresses or contact phone numbers. Its enrichable contact properties cover name, job title, employment role, seniority, location, and a social profile URL. A company-level phone number is available on the company object, but that’s a switchboard line, not a direct dial to the person you want to reach.

So if you’re running outbound and your CRM records are missing verified emails or mobile numbers, HubSpot’s native enrichment won’t close those gaps. You’ll want a tool that can.

How to enable HubSpot’s three enrichment modes

HubSpot offers three enrichment modes. Each one handles data differently, so choosing the right combination matters for data integrity.

  • Automatic enrichment: fills blank properties on new records and never overwrites a value set by a user or another system. It is off by default and a Super Admin has to switch it on under Settings → Data Management → Data Enrichment.

  • Manual enrichment: enriches one record from the Intelligence tab, or up to 100 records at a time from an index page, and can overwrite existing values if you allow it.

  • Continuous enrichment: keeps previously enriched values current, and stops on any property a person or integration edits.

Most teams start with automatic enrichment enabled for both contacts and companies, then layer in continuous enrichment once they’ve confirmed their field mapping won’t overwrite trusted data.

Tip: Before enabling any mode at scale, confirm contacts have work emails and companies have domains. Records missing these identifiers will simply be skipped.

What HubSpot enrichment costs

Standard enrichment consumes zero HubSpot Credits. HubSpot states this outright in its documentation.

That said, two related features, smart properties and buyer intent, still bill HubSpot Credits. Smart properties consume HubSpot Credits. Standard enrichment does not. That distinction is the single biggest source of surprise bills.

HubSpot’s built-in data enrichment is included in Core Seats on Starter, Professional, and Enterprise plans. So if you’re already paying for a HubSpot subscription, the basic enrichment is effectively free.

Tracking one company with Buyer Intent signals costs 10 credits ($0.10) per month; monitoring a custom signal (beta) runs 50 credits/month, according to HubSpot’s Products & Services Catalog (retrieved September 2026). Those costs sit on top of your subscription and add up quickly if you’re monitoring hundreds of accounts.

Where HubSpot native enrichment falls short

You’ll typically hit three walls with HubSpot’s built-in enrichment.

No contact emails or phone numbers. This is the biggest gap for outbound teams. HubSpot does not find missing emails, check whether an email will bounce, or add mobile numbers. If a rep imports a list of target accounts and only has company domains, HubSpot will fill in firmographics but won’t surface anyone to actually contact.

Uneven coverage outside the US. Clearbit’s data quality varies by region, with strong US coverage but thinner data for European, APAC, and emerging-market companies. HubSpot enrichment is accurate for public-company firmographics but limited for contact-level data, especially mobile numbers and decision-maker titles at non-enterprise accounts.

No job change or intent tracking in standard enrichment. Breeze Intelligence has no job change tracking in its standard enrichment. Buyer Intent is a separate, credit-consuming feature. If you want to know when a prospect switches roles or their company starts hiring for a relevant position, you’ll want a dedicated tool.

How to set up an enrichment workflow in HubSpot

HubSpot workflows let you trigger enrichment based on specific events rather than running it passively on every new record. This is useful when you want to enrich only at meaningful moments, like when a lead hits MQL status or when a deal moves to a qualified stage.

1. Choose a trigger

Start by creating auto-enrich triggers: when a contact fills out a form, when a new company is added, or when a deal reaches a specific stage.

2. Add the Enrich Record action

In HubSpot, go to Automation → Workflows, create a contact-based or company-based workflow, and add the action CRM → Enrich Record. This tells HubSpot to run enrichment as a step in the workflow rather than relying on the global automatic setting.

3. Configure field mapping and overwrite rules

Field mapping controls which enrichment data writes to which HubSpot property. And critically, whether enrichment data overwrites existing values or only fills empty fields.

Configure mapping rules before running enrichment on any significant volume. Set critical fields to “only fill if empty” unless you have a specific reason to allow overwriting.

4. Test on a small batch

Test with a small batch of contacts before activating for your full database. Review which fields were updated, check for unexpected overwrites, and confirm downstream automations (lead scoring, routing, sequences) still behave correctly.

5. Add a fallback for gaps

For records that HubSpot can’t enrich (no work email, no domain, or simply no match in the dataset), add a branch in your workflow. You can route these contacts to a third-party enrichment tool, flag them for manual research, or set a task for a rep to find the data on LinkedIn.

How third-party tools fill the gaps HubSpot leaves

When HubSpot’s native enrichment can’t provide what you’re after (verified emails, direct dials, intent signals, or deeper technographic data), a third-party tool fills the gap. The right choice depends on what data you’re missing and whether you want enrichment-only or enrichment connected to outreach.

When you import HubSpot contacts into lemlist, for example, you can run LinkedIn enrichment, email finder, phone finder, and email verification, so leads are ready to contact before the campaign even starts. (HubSpot x lemlist Integration) AI Agentic Enrichment reads five sources, including your HubSpot CRM, company websites, LinkedIn profiles, and past call recordings, then returns ready-to-use personalization variables. That means HubSpot handles the firmographic baseline, and lemlist adds the contact-level data and context your reps actually use in outreach.

How to keep HubSpot data clean after enrichment

Enrichment without maintenance leads to the same problem you started with: unreliable data. A few rules keep your CRM healthy over time.

Deduplicate before enriching. If the same person appears twice with different email domains, enriching both records just doubles the mess. Look for duplicates, outdated info, and incomplete records. HubSpot’s built-in deduplication tool is a good starting point.

Track when records were last enriched. Create a custom date property (e.g., “Last Enriched Date”) and stamp it in your workflow. Then build a segment of records where that date is older than 90 days, and re-enrich or review them periodically.

Protect fields you trust. Use HubSpot’s “fill empty only” mapping for any field where a human or another system has already set a known-good value. Overwriting a rep’s manually confirmed direct dial with stale data from an automated source is a fast way to erode trust in your CRM.

Watch for job changes. A contact who changed companies six months ago still shows their old title in your CRM until something refreshes it. HubSpot’s continuous enrichment helps here, but it only updates properties it originally filled. For the rest, a tool that tracks job changes and flags updated records is worth considering. lemlist’s intent signals, for instance, can detect job changes and automatically trigger fresh outreach tied to that moment.

Build your first enriched outbound sequence

If your HubSpot CRM already has the accounts you want to reach but lacks verified contact details and personalization context, connecting it to an outreach platform that handles enrichment at import gives you the fastest path from list to live campaign.

With lemlist, you can pull contacts directly from HubSpot, enrich them with verified emails and phone numbers, and launch multichannel sequences (email, LinkedIn, calls) from one workflow, with all activity synced back to HubSpot.

Frequently asked questions

HubSpot has built-in data enrichment, included in Core Seats on Starter, Professional, and Enterprise. Automatic enrichment is turned off by default for both objects, so a Super Admin has to switch it on.

Standard enrichment consumes zero HubSpot Credits. However, Smart Property enrichment (custom AI-powered fields) still consumes credits, as does Buyer Intent tracking. You do still need a paid HubSpot subscription to access enrichment at all.

Breeze Intelligence is the umbrella that includes standard data enrichment, buyer intent, and smart properties. Standard enrichment fills firmographic and role-based fields. You’ll have 40+ enrichment attributes available, ranging from firmographics such as company size and revenue to contact details like job titles and social profiles.

Yes. You can add an “Enrich Record” action as a step in any contact-based or company-based HubSpot workflow. Use HubSpot workflows to trigger enrichment based on specific actions: when contact lifecycle stage changes to MQL, when deal stage moves to qualified, or when a company property “last enriched date” is older than 90 days.

In HubSpot’s property-mapping settings, administrators can map supported enrichment fields to compatible CRM properties and choose: fill empty values only, fill and overwrite existing values, or do not fill. The safest default is “fill empty values only” for every field except those you’ve explicitly decided to keep fresh from external sources.
