Timing matters

These are the most frequently used follow ups out there -  the ones that you send after a meeting. As a matter of fact, a lot of salespeople send them even while still on the call with their prospects. 

So open rate is not the problem, as long as you send it asap, because these follow-up are emails that your prospects await for. The rest rests on your sales skills.

Next steps are a must-have and another asset everybody leverages. But Richard has this notion of repeating things like challenges, timelines and proposed solutions to speed the process. And it works rather nicely. In this template they are sharp, clean and thus easy to read.
