How to Move from Ocean.io to lemlist Without Pausing Campaigns
Why teams move from Ocean.io to a full outreach platform
Ocean.io is a B2B prospecting platform built around AI lookalike search: you provide reference customers or describe an ideal account, and it returns similar companies and contacts. Where it stops, though, is outreach. It does not include its own email sequencer, so exported contacts still need to flow into a separate outreach tool.
That gap is the usual reason teams switch. You end up paying for Ocean.io’s list building, then paying again for Salesloft or Outreach to actually contact those leads, then stitching deliverability monitoring on top. Moving to a platform that covers the full cycle (finding leads, enriching them, running multichannel campaigns, protecting deliverability) eliminates two or more tools and the data-transfer headaches between them.

What to audit inside Ocean.io before you export anything
A clean migration starts before any CSV is downloaded. Skip this step and you will import dead contacts, lose custom fields, or break a live deal thread.
Company and contact lists
Catalog every saved search, company list, and people list inside Ocean.io. Ocean.io returns similar companies and contacts from a claimed database of 67M+ companies and 250M+ people, but only the current results of a dynamic saved search can be exported. Static lists export as-is.
Custom fields, tags, and segments
Document any custom properties, tags, or segmentation logic you applied. Variables are case-sensitive and must be used in exactly the specified format inside lemlist (see how to use variables to personalize emails), so naming conventions matter when you map fields later.
CRM integrations and field mappings
Ocean.io has native integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, and Attio. If you connected any of these, record which fields were mapped and in which direction. You will recreate those mappings in lemlist’s integration settings.
Active outreach handled outside Ocean.io
Since Ocean.io doesn’t run sequences, identify which tool currently handles your email and LinkedIn campaigns. Note which sequences are mid-flight, because those contacts require special handling (more on that below).
How to export all your data from Ocean.io
Ocean.io allows exporting data via CSV or through API integrations. Pick the path that matches your setup.
1. Export via the Ocean.io web app
Select a company or people list, click export, and choose CSV. Ocean.io uses a credit system for exports and email verification. Each time you export company or contact data, or verify an email address, you’ll use up a certain number of credits. You can purchase additional credits if you need them.
2. Pull larger datasets through the API
The Ocean.io API gives you programmatic access to company and people data, search by filters or lookalike domains, enrich records, reveal contact details, and export to your CRM or data pipeline. All requests require an API token from Settings → API tokens.
3. Download CRM-synced records as a backup
If Ocean.io already pushed data into HubSpot, Salesforce, or Pipedrive, you can export those records directly from the CRM. This gives you a second copy that includes any notes or enrichment your team added after the original sync.
Clean and transform your data before importing
Importing raw Ocean.io exports straight into lemlist is a shortcut to bounces, broken personalization, and wasted send capacity.
Remove hard bounces and stale contacts
Delete contacts with known invalid emails or disconnected phone numbers. If Ocean.io flagged contacts as unverified or catch-all, set those aside. You can re-verify them inside lemlist using waterfall enrichment rather than importing questionable records.
Standardize field names for lemlist
lemlist includes predefined variables: {{email}}, {{firstName}}, {{lastName}}, {{picture}}, {{phone}}, {{linkedinUrl}}, {{companyName}}, {{icebreaker}}, {{sender.name}}. These work automatically when you import leads with matching CSV column names (see how to format custom variables correctly). Rename your CSV column headers to match.
Custom variables are created automatically when you import a CSV with additional columns beyond the default ones. Ensure that imported fields are mapped accurately to your campaign settings to avoid issues during the import process (more in how to use variables to personalize emails). Any extra column (e.g., “industry” or “painPoint”) becomes a custom variable named after its header.
Tag leads by funnel stage
Add a column like “funnelStage” to your CSV with values such as “cold,” “replied,” or “meeting booked.” This lets you segment leads inside lemlist immediately after import and route them into the right campaigns instead of treating everyone as net-new.
Set up lemlist for day-one deliverability
Never import leads and start sending from a fresh account on the same day. Deliverability setup comes first, and it typically takes a few weeks to do properly.
1. Connect or buy a sending domain
Use a dedicated sending domain separate from your main company domain. With lemlist, you can connect an existing domain in seconds or purchase a new sending domain directly in-app, and automated deliverability setup configures your authentication records automatically.
2. Authenticate DNS records
Verification also unlocks the technical setup check, which tells you if anything in your DNS is off. Your technical setup directly affects deliverability and includes SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. lemlist walks you through each record and verifies authentication after you save.
3. Start lemwarm before importing leads
Warm-up runs in two phases before any campaign: roughly 2–3 weeks of ramp-up to reach your target volume, then 2 weeks of stabilization with no spam, so about one month in total. Keep lemlist at 0 for both. Only begin outreach once your Warmup Score reaches 90+, lemwarm shows no spam, and your inbox rate has stayed above 90% for 14 straight days (see lemlist’s guide to setting up lemwarm and warming your inbox).
Tip: Keep lemwarm on at 10 to 20/day even after campaigns start. If spam placement rises in lemwarm, that’s the early warning that lemlist activity is hurting your inbox. Pull back fast.
4. Configure inbox rotation and sending limits
Inbox rotation spreads sending volume across multiple domains and inboxes, so no single identity gets burned. For 500 emails/day, use 3–4 domains, 2–3 inboxes per domain, and rotation logic to spread volume evenly. lemlist also supports time-zone-based sending and provider matching (Gmail-to-Gmail, Outlook-to-Outlook).
Import Ocean.io leads into lemlist step by step
With your data cleaned and your sending infrastructure warm, you are ready to bring contacts in.
1. Upload your cleaned CSV
Row 1 contains column names (email, firstName, companyName, etc.). Row 2+: Lead data, one lead per row. Critical rule: First row = column names, not data. If your first row contains an actual email address, lemlist treats it as a column name and skips that lead (see lemlist’s guide on how to import leads from a CSV file).
2. Map custom fields to lemlist variables
During import, lemlist shows a mapping screen where you assign each CSV column to a default variable or mark it as custom. By the end of this step, you’ll assign CSV columns to lemlist default variables (email, firstName, linkedinUrl). lemlist recognizes these default variables: {{email}}, {{firstName}}, {{lastName}}, {{picture}}, {{phone}}, {{linkedinUrl}}, {{companyName}}, {{icebreaker}}, as listed in choosing the right CSV import type.
3. Enrich contacts with waterfall enrichment
After import, run lemlist’s waterfall enrichment to find and verify missing emails and phone numbers across 14+ data providers. This fills gaps in Ocean.io’s data without another tool. You pay only for verified results.
4. Reconnect your CRM
If you import leads from CSV, manual entry, or API, lemlist doesn’t know which HubSpot fields to map to. You must create custom properties in HubSpot first (see how to troubleshoot lemlist–HubSpot sync issues), then map them in lemlist under Settings → Integrations → HubSpot → Field Mapping. For Salesforce, authenticate via OAuth and map fields in lemlist’s visual UI.
Handle mid-funnel leads during the switchover
This is the section most migration guides skip. Not every lead can be paused and re-enrolled in a fresh campaign.
Warm prospects in active conversations: Leads who have replied or are in an active back-and-forth do not belong in automated sequences. Add them to lemlist manually and manage them through the unified inbox, where you can reply across email, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp from one thread.
Leads close to conversion: Prospects with meetings booked or proposals sent stay in your CRM pipeline. Tag them in lemlist with a custom lifecycle stage like “do not contact” and handle follow-ups manually until the deal closes or stalls.
Cold leads safe to re-enroll: Contacts who never replied or opened are the safest to migrate in bulk. If your old sequencing tool tracked engagement data, use it to decide whether to re-enrich before re-enrolling.
Rebuild your campaigns without starting from scratch
You do not have to rewrite every sequence from memory. If you had campaigns running in Salesloft, Outreach, or another tool alongside Ocean.io, export the step-by-step logic (email copy, delays, conditions) and recreate it in lemlist’s campaign builder.
lemlist’s campaign builder supports multichannel sequences across email, LinkedIn, calls, SMS, and WhatsApp from one workflow, so you can often consolidate two or more old sequences into a single campaign. lemAgent, the built-in AI assistant, can also build a full campaign from a plain-language description of your goal and ICP, which cuts rebuild time considerably.
Run both tools in parallel and when to cut over
A hard cutover creates pipeline gaps. Instead, run Ocean.io for account discovery during any remaining contract time while lemlist handles all new outreach.
Cut over fully once three conditions are met: your lemlist campaigns are live and generating replies, your CRM is syncing correctly in both directions, and your deliverability metrics (inbox placement, bounce rate) are stable. At that point, let your Ocean.io contract lapse.
Ocean.io features lemlist replaces (and one gap to plan for)
Ocean.io’s core differentiator is lookalike search: paste a domain, get similar companies. lemlist’s lead database takes a different approach. Instead of matching against a reference company, you define shared attributes (industry, tech stack, funding stage, hiring trends) as ICP filters across 65M+ companies. If lookalike search is central to your workflow, you will want to identify the attributes that made your best customers “look alike” and save those as a reusable filter.
For intent data, lemlist’s Intent Signals track website visits, hiring changes, funding rounds, tech stack changes, and LinkedIn engagement, then auto-enroll matching leads into campaigns with AI-personalized messaging. That goes further than dashboard visibility because the signals trigger action directly.
For contact enrichment, both platforms use waterfall enrichment. lemlist pulls from 14+ providers, charges only for verified results, and feeds enriched data directly into campaign variables with no export or re-import step.

Your first 48 hours on lemlist after leaving Ocean.io
You exported, cleaned, imported, enriched, and launched without a gap in outreach. The transition period is where most teams stall, so if you have already checked every box above, the hard part is behind you.
If you are still in the planning stage, the fastest way to pressure-test this workflow is to start a 14-day free trial and set up your sending infrastructure before your Ocean.io contract ends. Or, if you want someone to walk through the migration with you, book a demo.
